Diagnostic Service Tools IBM Enhanced Diagnostic Diskette Version 1.8.362 PN 05L1930 Description The IBM Enhanced Diagnostic Diskette is a self-booting DOS-based diagnostic utility used to detect failing hardware components. IBM, in conjunction with Watergate Software, the makers of PC Doctor diagnostic software, have developed a highly effective diagnostic application designed specifically to support the IBM PC 300, 700, and Intellistation Series product family. This new diagnostic has been developed to: -Decrease service costs associated with a high No Defect Found (NDF) rate on returned parts. -To create a "machine specific" diagnostic application that is designed to thoroughly interrogate hardware and firmware while ensuring that the package is user-friendly enough for an end user to confidently diagnose a hardware failure with greater than 95% efficiency. This includes intermittent memory related failures. Particular focus has been given to memory isolation to the SIMM/DIMM level. Effectiveness ratings for the enhanced memory test exceed 95%. This translates into reduced service calls relating to intermittent memory failures, reduced NDF rates on cache, SIMMs/DIMMs, system boards, processors and related hardware. The end result is improved customer satisfaction and increased servicer confidence in the diagnostic package. Supported Machines The new IBM PC 300/700/Intellistation Enhanced Diagnostic program is designed to function on the following machine types: PC 300 Series PC 700 Series (PC 330/340/350/360/365) (730/750/PWS M & Z Pro) PC 140 - 6260 PC 700 - 6875/6885 PC 300GL - 6272/6282/6561 PC 700 MC - 6876/6886 PC 300PL - 6562 PC 340 - 6560 PC 700 - 6877/6887 PC 300 - 6575/6585 PWS M Pro - 6888 PC 300 - 6576/6586 PWS Z Pro - 6898/6899 PC 300 - 6577/6587 PC 300XL - 6588 PC 365 - 6589 PC 360 - 6598 The exception to the above list are the Japanese 6885 PC 700 Systems. Starting the IBM Enhanced Diagnostics Program To start the program: 1. Shut down and power-off the system. 2. Wait 10 seconds. 3. Insert the IBM Enhanced Diagnostics Diskette into diskette drive A. 4. Power-on the system. The initial diagnostics menu will be displayed. Navigating Through the Diagnostic Programs Use either the mouse or the keyboard to navigate through the Enhanced Diagnostics program. - Use the cursor movement keys to navigate within the menus. - The "Enter" key is used to select a menu item. - The "Esc" key is used to back up to the previous menu. - For online help select F1. Running Diagnostic Tests There are four ways to run the diagnostic tests: 1. Using the cursor movement keys, highlight "Run Normal Test" or "Run Quick Test" from the Diagnostics Menu and then press "Enter". This will automatically run a pre-defined group of tests from each test category. "Run Normal Test" runs a more extensive set of tests than does "Run Quick Test" and takes longer to execute. 2. Press "F5" to automatically run all selected tests in all categories. 3. From within a test category, press "Ctrl-Enter" to automatically run only the selected tests in that category. 4. Using the cursor movement keys, highlight a single test within a test category and then press "Enter". This will run only that test. Press "Esc" at any time to stop the testing process. Test results, (N/A, PASSED, FAILED, ABORTED), are displayed in the filed beside the test description and in the test log. IBM Advanced Memory Diagnostics The IBM Advanced Memory Diagnostics provide the capability to identify a particular memory module (SIMM/DIMM) which fails during testing. Use the System Board Layouts section in the latest PC 300/700, IntelliStation Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) to reference the memory sockets, or select "F1 twice" to load the Online Manual and select Chapter 11 'SIMM/DIMM Locator'. Follow the steps below to locate the IBM Advanced Memory Diagnostics test options. 1. Select the DIAGNOSTICS option on the toolbar and press "Enter". 2. Highlight either the 'Memory Test-Full' or 'Memory Test-Quick option and press "Enter". Memory Test-Full The full memory test will take about 80 seconds per MB of memory and will detect marginal, intermittent, and solid (stuck) memory failures. Memory Test-Quick The quick memory test will take about 20 seconds per MB of memory and will detect solid (stuck) memory failures only. Notes: Either level of memory testing can be performed on all memory or a single SIMM/DIMM socket. Only sockets containing a SIMM or DIMM can be selected for testing. Unpopulated sockets are noted by "........" besides the test description. Quick and Full Erase - Hard Drive The IBM PC Enhanced Diagnostics Program offers two hard drive format utilities: - Quick Erase Hard Drive - Full Erase Hard Drive The Quick Erase Hard Drive provides a DOS utility that performs the following: - Destroys the Master Boot Record (MBR) on the hard drive. - Destroys all copy of the FAT Table on all partitions (both the master and backup). - Destroys the partition table. - Provides messages that warn the user that this is a non-recoverable process. The Full Erase Hard Drive provides a DOS utility that performs the following: - Performs all the steps in Quick Erase. - Provides a DOS utility that writes random data to all sectors of the hard drive. - Provides an estimate of time to completion along with a visual representation of completion status. - Provides messages that warn the user that this is a non-recoverable process. ------------------------------------------------------------- | Important | | _________ | | Make sure customer backs up all data before you format the | | hard drive. | ------------------------------------------------------------- To select the Quick Erase or Full Erase Hard Drive utility: - Select the UTILITY option on the toolbar and press enter. - Select either the QUICK ERASE or FULL ERASE HARD DISK option and then, follow the instruction. Viewing the Test Log Errors reported by the diagnostic test will be displayed by the program as a failed test. To view details of a failure or to view a list of test results, do the following from any test category screen: - Press "F3" to activate the log File - Press "F3" again to save the file to diskette or F2 to print the file.
