INSTALLING THE MATROX VIDEO DRIVER AND POWERDESK UTILITY ------------------------------------------------------------------ Refer to your Owner's Manual to install your Matrox video adapter in your system. Windows 98 supports multiple video cards installed in the system. If you are installing multiple Matrox video adapters in your system, your system BIOS must disable all VGA-enabled cards it finds after the first one. When Windows 98 starts, the miniport driver will find all cards and enable them for use. THIS IS GUARANTEED ONLY IF YOUR SYSTEM BIOS IS FULLY PCI-COMPLIANT. IF YOUR SYSTEM BIOS IS NOT FULLY PCI-COMPLIANT, MULTIPLE MATROX CARDS MAY NOT WORK. Multiple-card installations are similar to single-card installations. The system will automatically assign separate addresses to each Matrox video card, allowing the driver to issue commands to each card. In a multiple-card configuration, all cards must be either Millennium G400 AGP, Millennium G200 AGP, Millennium G200 PCI, or G100 Productiva multi-head PCI video adapters, and all cards must run with the same resolution and pixel depth (number of colors). The VGA-enabled card will drive the top left monitor. A) First Time Hardware Install ------------------------------ The first time the Matrox video adapter is installed in your system, Windows 95/98 will auto-detect it at startup. If you are upgrading Matrox drivers that are currently installed, go to the "Video Driver and PowerDesk Installation" section below. 1. Start Windows 95/98. Windows will report finding a PCI adapter (even if you have an AGP card) and will prompt you to install the display driver. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)" driver. 3. Restart the computer once the installation is complete. 4. After Windows 95/98 has restarted, proceed to the "Video Driver and PowerDesk Installation" section below. B) Video Driver and PowerDesk Installation ------------------------------------------ NOTE: (1) Before removing the Matrox video driver and PowerDesk, please close all open application programs and disable any anti-virus software that is running on your computer until the Matrox driver installation is complete! (2) If you would like to COMPLETELY monitor the installation of all files, regsitry entries, and INF file updates associated with the Matrox video driver and PowerDesk installation, it is recommended that an installation monitoring program (e.g. -Symantec's Norton Cleansweep) is used during the installation of the Matrox video driver and Powerdesk. Installing the Matrox driver and PowerDesk is a simple procedure. Simply run the file 'SETUP.EXE' from the hard drive or CD-ROM directory where the driver files are stored. 1. Run SETUP from from the directory on your local hard drive, network drive, or CDROM that contains the Matrox video driver. For example, if your CDROM is drive D: and the driver is located in a directory called MATROX, then you would type: D:\MATROX\SETUP. If you're not sure exactly where the driver is, use the BROWSE option on the RUN... window to locate the Matrox SETUP program. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the Matrox driver and PowerDesk. 3. After the video driver and PowerDesk are installed, the setup program prompts you to restart your computer for all changes to take effect. | You can customize the installation process by editing the "install.inf" | file. For details, see the UNATTEND.TXT file. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. NOTES, PROBLEMS, AND LIMITATIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1) Latest Intel INF Installation Utlity Must be Installed ------------------------------------------------------ The latest Intel INF Installation Utility for Windows 95/98 must be installed on the system before the Matrox driver is installed in order to take full advantage of the enhanced AGP features. Also, if the patch is not loaded on Pentium Xeon based systems before the Matrox driver, the system will boot to a blank screen after the Matrox driver is installed. The only way to recover is to boot in safe mode, remove the Matrox driver, install the Intel INF Installation Utility, and then reinstall the Matrox driver. 2) DirectX V6.0 or Later Must Be Installed --------------------------------------- Direct X V6.0 or later installation is required for the Matrox Monitor Settings tab to work correctly. if Direct X V6.0 is not installed, the monitor adjustment buttons and test buttons may not work. Also, resolutions above 1600x1200 may not be selectable. Direct X V6.0 installation is also recommended to take full advantage of all the hardware features on the Matrox video adapters. DirectX is available from the Microsoft Web site, and is included with many applications and games that require DirectX. Note that depending on the origin of your Microsoft DirectX software, it may not include DirectVideo support. For faster playback of Indeo and Cinepak AVI files, you should install Microsoft DirectVideo support. 3) Matrox AGP 2x and 4x cards -------------------------- On the Matrox PowerDesk "Information" property sheet, Matrox G400-based graphics cards are listed as "AGP 2x" or "AGP 2x-4x". All Matrox G400 graphics cards are slot-compatible with all AGP computers. However, cards with an ATX form factor will only fit on ATX-type motherboards. Most cards and motherboards use an ATX design.) "AGP 2x" cards use 2x mode with AGP 2x or 4x computers. "AGP 2x-4x" cards use 4x mode with 4x computers, and 2x mode with 2x computers. Because of new AGP specifications, Matrox G200-based AGP graphics cards may not be slot-compatible with some AGP 4x computers. 4) Matrox bus mastering -------------------- This driver supports bus mastering. Bus mastering is a feature that allows expansion cards to perform tasks at the same time as your computer's CPU. If you have a fast Pentium computer (faster than 166 MHz), the display performance of most programs is improved when bus mastering is used. To use bus mastering with 3D (DirectX) programs, your graphics card needs an interrupt request (IRQ). Most computers automatically assign an IRQ to graphics cards, but some do not. If your graphics card hasn't been assigned an IRQ, programs that use Matrox bus mastering may not work properly. For more information, see your Matrox or system manual. 5) Adobe Type Manager Limitation ----------------------------- With Adobe Type Manager installed, you cannot run the driver if the "Advanced Graphics Acceleration Settings" is set to none. Note that ATM is installed as part of Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is an Adobe problem documented in the Windows 95/98 "display.txt" file. 6) Monitors in Interlaced Mode --------------------------- Some older monitors such as the NEC 3D and many "SuperVGA" monitors do not support non-interlaced mode in all resolutions. The Matrox display driver does not properly handle interlaced mode with the Windows 95/98 monitor selection method. If you have one of these monitors, please use the Matrox Monitor selection method. 7) DirectDraw and Automatic Power Management ----------------------------------------- As stated in "Microsoft DirectX release Notes", September 30, 1995, a DirectDraw game may be unable to restore properly if it is suspended by Automatic Power Management utilities. 8) Installation in Different Language Versions of Windows 95/98 ------------------------------------------------------------ If you install software in a language different from the language of your operating system (for example, English software on a Japanese system), you may have problems with text and dialog box controls being cut off. This is because of differences in system fonts. 9) Secondary Display Controller Option ----------------------------------- Certain models of Matrox graphics cards support a secondary display controller. With one of these graphics cards, you can use more than one computer display at a time. A secondary display controller can be enabled or disabled in Matrox PowerDesk software. If a secondary display controller is enabled, note the following limitations with the secondary display (the main display works normally): - The second monitor output is limited to a maximum resolution of 1280x1024 and only supports 16 and 32bpp. For analog displays, the maximum pixel clock is 136MHz which equates to 1280x1024 at 75Hz refresh rate. - The "Color" property sheet is unavailable and the "Colorific" program isn't supported. - The mouse pointer is drawn entirely by the software. As a result, the mouse pointer may flicker or disappear while it's in an area of the display that's being redrawn quickly (for example, a video window). - The Matrox zoom feature is unavailable. - If your Matrox graphics card has DualHead support and you're using Windows 95/98, the "DualHead Zoom" feature doesn't display digital video that is using the video overlay feature of your Matrox graphics card. Programs that use the video overlay feature include Microsoft Media Player, Zoran SoftDVD and other programs that use ActiveMovie or DirectX Media. If the "DualHead Zoom" feature is used on a region that's using hardware-based video overlay, that region will appear as a solid color on your secondary display. (If your secondary display is a TV, you can use the "DualHead DVDMax" feature to view this type of video full-screen on your secondary display.) 10) Matrox TV Output Option ----------------------- Certain models of Matrox graphics cards support TV output. With TV output support, you can view or record your computer display with a TV or video recorder connected to your graphics card. Recommendation -------------- While playing games using TV output, we recommend you use a 640 x 480 display resolution. This is because the resolution capabilities of TVs are lower than most computer monitors. If you use a higher display resolution (800 x 600 or 1024 x 768), the display on your TV may not look as sharp as the display of your computer monitor. That is, some of the extra detail may be harder to see on your TV. For Matrox G100/G200 cards with TV output support, Matrox default advanced TV output settings are good for viewing most computer graphics (for example, computer games or your Windows desktop) on most TVs. Based on broadcast standards, there are advanced TV output settings that are better suited for viewing full-screen video (for example, from a video file). These settings are: NTSC Brightness : 180 Contrast : 234 Saturation : 137 Hue : 0 PAL Brightness : 167 Contrast : 255 Saturation : 138 Hue : 0 Note: For ideal settings, you may also need to adjust the settings on your TV. The default brightness, contrast, saturation and hue settings on most consumer video devices are higher than broadcast standards. These settings are usually OK for viewing video but may not look OK with computer graphics. This is why Matrox default TV output settings are lower than what's ideal for video. For more information on how to adjust settings on your TV, see your TV manual. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. HELP AND SOFTWARE UPGRADES ------------------------------------------------------------------ Video driver updates can be obtained from IBM at the following web location: http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/files/html (do a search on "drivers") For technical problems, contact the IBM HelpDesk at 1-800-772-2227 ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. SUPPORTED RESOLUTIONS, COLOR DEPTHS, AND REFRESH RATES ------------------------------------------------------------------ The resolutions and refresh rates supported by the Matrox driver are dependent the video adpater installed in the system and the monitor that is selected. To view the resolutions that are supported and the maximum vertical refresh rate for the monitor currently selected, use the resolution slider bar under the Settings tab of the Display Properties window. The Display Properties window can be displayed by right clicking your mouse anywhere on your desktop's background and selecting "Display Properties" with the left mouse button. The maximum color depth for each resolution is dependent on many factors. The factors affecting the maximum color depth are the display resolution, the total amount of memory installed on the adapter and the 3D features that are turned on. Enabling the 3D features consumes some of the video memory and therefore reduces the maximum amount of colors. Shown below are the maximum possible resolutions and color depth combinations for 16MB, 8MB, and 4MB of video memory. MAXIMUM COLOR DEPTHS - 16, 8, 4MB OF VIDEO MEMORY +===========+===========+===========+===========+ |Resolution |Colors-16MB|Colors -8MB|Colors -4MB| | (Pels) | (bpp) | (bpp) | (bpp) | +===========+===========+===========+===========+ |640x480 | | | | |800x600 |8,16,24,32 |8,16,24,32 |8,16,24,32 | |1024x768 | | | | |1152x864 | | | | +===========+===========+===========+===========+ |1280x1024 |8,16,24,32 |8,16,24,32 |8,16,24 | +===========+===========+===========+===========+ |1600x1024 | | | | |1600x1200 | | | | |1920x1034 |8,16,24,32 |8,16,24,32 |8,16 | |1600x1280 | | | | |1920x1080 | | | | +===========+===========+===========+===========+ |1920x1200 | | | | |1792x1344* | | | | |1800x1440 |8,16,24,32 |8,16,24 |8 | |1856x1392* | | | | |1920x1440 | | | | +===========+===========+===========+===========+ |2048x1536* |8,16,24,32 |8,16 |8 | +===========+===========+===========+===========+ * =only supported on Matrox Millennium G400 bpp = bits per pixel -8=256 colors -15=32768 colors -16=65536 colors -24=16,777,216 colors -32=16,777,216 colors + 8 bit alpha channel for 3D
