IBM ThinkPad May 18, 1999 ThinkPad 600, 600E, 770, 770ED, 770X, 770Z V.90 Upgrade for internal ACP Modem for Windows 95/98/NT 4.0 Version 2.516 ====================================================================== What This Program Does ----------------------- This software program updates your ThinkPad's internal ACP Modem code to the latest ACP V.90 Modem code. This program is for systems using Windows 95/98/NT 4. We identify this upgrade as v2.516 which will be consistent with the information you will see in the ThinkPad Modem QuickTest application. Note: ACP Modems updated to version 2.516, under certain telephone line conditions and V.90 server modem combinations, may not show improvement in performance or connectivity compared to prior ACP Modem V.90 releases. The files V90PAPER.RTF and V90FAQ.RTF provided on the IBM ThinkPad support site contain answers to many common questions about V.90 technology (connect speeds, line conditions, etc.). Actual connection speed depends on many factors and is often less than the maximum possible. This program is designed to update the ThinkPad ACP Modem in the following areas: - The percentage of V.90 connections vs. V.34 connections. - General performance for some low connect speed V.90 connections.. - Connectivity for difficult telephone line conditions and V.90 server modem combinations - Enhanced dial-tone detection capabilities on PBXs worldwide. - Streamlined country selection - Simplified installation by having one V.90 upgrade executable for all ThinkPad platforms with the Internal ACP Modem. (Note: The base modem drivers may still need to be upgraded as indicated below in Item 2 under Installation Guide) This update program also includes support for the countries listed below under "Supported Countries". This update program supersedes the Modem Country Update Diskette Version 1.5 for ThinkPad 600 or Version 1.6 for ThinkPad 770/770ED (P/N:27L8459), the Modem Country Update Diskette Version 2.1 (P/N: 27L8659), as well as V.90 Upgrades 1.0, 1.0WW, and 1.5WW. The following ThinkPad models are supported. - ThinkPad 600 (with Internal Modem) - ThinkPad 600E - ThinkPad 770 (with Internal Modem) - ThinkPad 770ED (with Internal Modem) - ThinkPad 770X - ThinkPad 770Z Summary of Changes ------------------ Where: Upgrade version (for example, 1.00 means Version 1.00) (New) New function or enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function <1.00> (V.90 2.411a) - (New) Initial release <1.00WW> (V.90 2.418) - (New) Release 1.00WW - Add V.90 support for countries worldwide <1.50WW> (V.90 2.424a) - (New) Release 1.50WW (V.90 2.424a) Areas affected by this update: - The percentage of V.90 connections vs. V.34 connections. - General performance for some low connect speed V.90 connections. - Connectivity for telephone line conditions that are non-V.90 capable. Note: A digital discontinuity (i.e., more than one analog to digital conversion between the client and the ISP/server modem) forces all V.90 modems to fallback to a V.34 connection. - Connectivity for difficult telephone line conditions and V.90 server modem combinations - Enhanced dial-tone detection capabilities on PBX's in the U.S. - Quick Tests application now displays the version of V.90 software installed <2.00WW> (V.90 2.516) - (New) v2.516 Areas affected by this update: - New naming convention for V.90 upgrades - The percentage of V.90 connections vs. V.34 connections. - General performance for some low connect speed V.90 connections. - Connectivity for difficult telephone line conditions and V.90 server modem combinations - Enhanced dial-tone detection capabilities on PBXs worldwide. - Added Argentina, Cyprus, Greece, India, and Turkey to the supported country list - Streamlined country selection - Simplified installation by having one V.90 upgrade executable for all ThinkPad platforms with the Internal ACP Modem. (Note: The base modem drivers may still need to be upgraded as indicated in Item 2 under Installation Guide) Installation Guide ------------------ NOTE: This driver will automatically extract to your hard drive. It will only extract under Windows 95/98 and Windows NT. The extraction process will NOT work with any other operating system. 1. Determine whether your machine is a 600, 600E, 770, 770ED, 770X, or a 770Z which has an internal ACP modem. If not, this code is not appropriate for your machine. 2. If the code is appropriate, determine your current level of ACP modem code by running the ACP modem Quick Tests utility. To run this program, go to the Windows Start menu on the machine you wish to upgrade, click on Programs, ThinkPad Modem, Quick Tests. This will start the Quick Tests application. In the upper right corner, you will see ThinkPad Modem x.xx (where x.xx is the release) and Build yy. These numbers will match one of the following: a. Release 2.33 Build 17 b. Release 2.33 Build 20 c. Release 2.35 Build 27 d. Release 2.35 Build 27A e. Release 2.35 Build 28A f. Release 2.35 Build 35 g. Release 2.35 Build 06 h. Release 2.35 Build 08 i. Release 2.35 Build 10 j. Release 2.36 Build 36 k. Release 2.50 Build 20 l. Release 2.50 Build 21 m. Release 2.51 Build 06 3. If you determine that you have any of the following Release/Build combinations: a. Release 2.33 Build 17 b. Release 2.33 Build 20 c. Release 2.35 Build 27 d. Release 2.35 Build 27A e. Release 2.35 Build 28A f. Release 2.35 Build 06 g. Release 2.35 Build 08 then you must first update your machine to the latest level of ACP modem code. These drivers must be installed on your machine prior to installing this V.90 upgrade. Follow the install directions on that web page to install the base software. When you have completed that step, please return here to complete the V.90 update. When you have determined what level of software is currently on your machine, click the [Exit] button on the Quick Tests application. 4. Download ACP90R2.EXE from the IBM Web Site and remember where you downloaded this file to. 5. Run ACP90R2.EXE from the location you saved the file to in the previous step and it will start the extraction wizard. a. Click Next at the ThinkPad 600, 600E, 770, 770ED, 770X, 770Z - V90 Upgrade for Internal ACP Modem for Windows 95/98/NT 4.0" window. b. If you agree to all the terms stated in the license agreement for Non-Warranted Programs, click NEXT. c. Extract the files to the default destination path: C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM and click on FINISH. d. At the "specified output folder does not exist, create it" window, click YES. e. It will extract the files, then start the Installation Wizard. If you wish to continue the installation, click on YES. If you wish to install the modem at a different time, click NO. To install the modem at a later time, click on START -> RUN and type in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM\MODEMV90.EXE f. If you clicked YES, the installation of the V.90 drivers will continue. When you are prompted to restart your computer, close all other applications on your machine, and click FINISH to restart your system. When the system restarts, it will redetect all the modem components. NOTE: The extraction wizard will leave both ACP90R2.EXE and MODEMV90.EXE on your system. If you need the hard disk space, you can delete either of the two files. If you delete both files, you will need to download ACP90R2.EXE to reinstall the V.90 update. NOTE: To uninstall the V.90 update, follow the instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling the ACP modem drivers.
