NOTE: + Visit the following URL to obtain the latest driver updates: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/support/thinkpad/tpopsys.html EXTRACTION INSTRUCTIONS: - Download this file to a temporary directory on your hard drive. - After executing the file, TP600ENT, you should have the five files listed above with the + (plus sign) next to them. - Follow the instructions in TP600ENT.TXT for installing Windows NT on the ThinkPad 600E. - After Windows NT is installed on the ThinkPad 600E, follow the instructions in CHOPPER.TXT for transferring the NT Drivers to the ThinkPad. - Once NTFILES.EXE is on the ThinkPad 600E, run the file to extract all the drivers. Follow the instructions given below for installing each driver. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS NT: ---------------------------------------- This information can also be found in the Online User's Guide for your ThinkPad 600E. (http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/support/thinkpad/tptechref.html) I. Installing Windows NT Before installing Windows NT, do the following: - Read the Windows NT installation guide included with Windows NT. - If you plan to use OS/2 Warp with Windows NT, you need to use the OS/2 Warp Boot Manager. For more information, read Installing IBM OS/2 in the Online User's Guide. You can install Windows NT using the internal CD-ROM drive or an externally attached CD-ROM drive through the port replicator. However, if your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, or if a port replicator is not available, use one of the following two alternative ways to install Windows NT: Using an external CD-ROM drive in a DOS environment If you have an external CD-ROM drive that connects under a DOS environment, you can install Windows NT in DOS: 1. Insert the Windows NT compact disc in the external CD-ROM drive. 2. Go to the CD-ROM directory; then go to the \I386 directory. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive D, go to D:\I386 3. At the command prompt, type WINNT; then press Enter. For example, D:\I386>winnt Follow the instructions on the screen. Using a network server You can install Windows NT on multiple computers by first copying the Windows NT master source files to a shared drive on a network server. After connecting your computer to a network, such as with the DOS LAN requester, you can install the files from the network server to your computer at the DOS command prompt. II. Installing the ThinkPad Configuration Program for Windows NT Note : You can assign the directory in which the ThinkPad Configuration program is installed. The ThinkPad Configuration program installer does not support the use of a long name for the directory in which the program is installed. It does NOT support path names with spaces, e.g. "C:\MY THINKPAD" To install the ThinkPad Configuration program for Windows NT: 1.) Start Windows NT, and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator. 2.) Click on 'Start' -> 'Run...'. 3.) Type "C:\DRIVERS\WNT\UTILITY\SETUP.EXE" and press 'Enter'. 4.) Follow the instructions on the screen. III. Installing the Audio Device Driver for Windows NT 1. Start Windows NT, and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator. 2. Click on 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 3. Double-click on the 'Multimedia' icon. The "Multimedia Properties" window appears. 4. Click on the 'Devices' tab and then on 'Add'. 5. Click on 'Unlisted or Updated Driver'. A window appears, prompting for the path of the drivers to be installed. 6. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WNT\AUDIO\ . Then click on 'OK' button. The audio driver list appears. 7. Select the Audio driver, then click on the 'OK' button. When the installation program prompts you for existing files or new files, click on new . 8. Press OK in the "CrystalWare Configuration" panel. When the installation program prompts you, restart Windows NT to make the change effective. IV. Installing the Service Pack for Windows NT If you are going to install Service Pack 3 or later for Windows NT, install it before the following drivers: + Display Driver + PC Card Support Software + ThinkPad Modem Software + Infrared Device Driver for Windows NT. If you subsequently reapply the service pack, you may have to reinstall these drivers. To install the service pack, follow the instructions in the readme file included with the service pack. V. Installing the Display Driver for Windows NT 1.) Start Windows NT and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator. 2.) Click on 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 3.) Double-click on the Display icon. 4.) In the "Display Properties" window, click on the Settings tab. 5.) Click on Display Type. 6.) In the "Adapter Type" window, click on Change. 7.) Click on Have Disk. 8.) Specify the directory where you extracted the driver files to, then click on the 'OK' button. Default location for the drivers is C:\DRIVERS\WNT\DISPLAY\. 9.) From the display devices in the selection list, click on NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV , and click on the 'OK' button. 10.) At the message "You are about to install a third-party driver", click 'Yes' to continue the installation. 11.) Click on the 'Close' button to close the Display type window. 12.) Click on the 'Close' button to close the Display properties window. 13.) Click on 'Yes' and restart Windows NT to make the driver effective. After you restart Windows NT, the display resolution is set to 640x480 with 256 colors as a default. If necessary, change the resolution and refresh rate as follows: 14.) When the "Invalid Display Settings" message appears, click on 'OK'. 15.) The "Display Properties" windows appears. Select your screen parameters from the color palette, desktop area, and refresh frequency. 16.) Click on 'Test' and make sure the selected mode is displayed correctly on the screen. 17.) Click on OK in the "Display Properties" window. VI. Using the Display Driver for an External Monitor If you are attaching an external monitor to the computer do the following. 1.) Start Windows NT. When the "OS Loader V4.00" window appears, prompting you to select the operating system, change the screen to CRT-only mode by pressing the Fn+F7 key combination. 2.) Log on to Windows NT as an administrator. Windows NT starts on the CRT screen. 3.) Double-click on My Computer, Control Panel, and Display. 4.) In the Display Properties window, click on the Settings tab. 5.) Click on List All Modes...; then select the resolution, color depth, and refresh frequency. 6.) Click on Test to make sure that the selected mode is displayed correctly on the monitor. 7.) Click on OK or Apply to make the change effective. Hints: o If you are installing the ThinkPad Configuration program for Windows NT, you can switch between display output types--External Display only, LCD only, or both--using the ThinkPad Configuration program. o If you are using Windows NT, you can create different video mode configuration profiles, such as one for the LCD mode and another one for the External Display mode. For more details about the hardware profile settings, read the Windows NT user's guide. VII. Installing the IBM TrackPoint Driver for Windows NT 1. Start Windows NT, and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator. 2. Click on 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 3. Double-click on the Mouse icon. 4. Click on the 'General' tab at the top of the "Mouse Properties" window. 5. Click on 'Change'. 6. Click on 'Have Disk'. 7. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WNT\TPOINT\. Then click on 'OK' button. Then mouse driver list appears. 8. Click on 'PS/2 TrackPoint' in the list. 9. Click on 'OK'. 10. Click on 'Close' in the "Mouse Properties" window. 11. Double-click on 'Devices' in 'Control Panel'. If the 'i8042 Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse Port' has been disabled, change it back to 'System'. Failure to do this will cause the TrackPoint and keyboard not to function after rebooting. 12. Restart your computer to make the new settings active. VIII. Installing PC Card Support Software for Windows NT Different PCMCIA cards require different versions of PCMCIA support. See the documentation that comes with your PCMCIA card to determine the type of PCMCIA support required. Card Wizard support is available from either Diskette Factory, the Customization CD, or the Software Selection CD. Review your online User's Guide for instructions on how to install these drivers. Important: If your system is connected to a network, log off before starting installation. You must install the Windows NT Service Pack before you install CardWizard. If you reinstall the Service Pack, you may be prompted whether to overwrite your OEM version of PCMCIA.SYS. Be sure to answer "NO". You may have to reinstall Card Wizard after installing the Service Pack. IX. Installing the ThinkPad Modem Software for Windows NT 1.) Start Windows NT 2.) Click on 'Start' -> 'Run...' 3.) Type "C:\DRIVERS\WNT\MODEM\SETUP" in the window. 4.) Click on OK and follow the instructions on the screen. Note: Non-U.S. users must run the Country Selection program in the ThinkPad Modem window after the ThinkPad Modem installation is complete. Restart the computer after you run Country Selection. For an updated list supported countries, download the V.90 ACP Modem update code. http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/support/thinkpad/tpopsys.html Configuring the ThinkPad Modem for Windows NT After installing the ThinkPad Modem software, assign a communication port (COM port) for the ThinkPad Modem: 1.) Click on 'Start' -> 'Programs' -> 'ThinkPad' -> 'ThinkPad Configuration'. 2.) Click on 'Modem'. 3.) Specify the necessary settings in the window. 4.) Click on OK. 5.) Restart the computer to make the changes effective. Next, add ThinkPad Modem in the Control Panel so that you can use communication applications that use the Unimodem facility of Windows NT, such as HyperTerminal or Dial-Up Networking: 1.) Click on 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 2.) Double-click on the Modems icon. 3.) Do the following: If you do not already have a modem installed, you immediately see the Install New Modem window. If you already have a modem installed, click on the Add button to open the Install New Modem window. 4.) Click on 'Next'. Windows NT searches for the modem. If successful, Windows NT reports that it has found a modem of type "ThinkPad Data Fax Modem.". If Windows NT fails to detect a modem, verify that your communication port was configured. Remember that the changes you make do not take effect until you restart Windows NT. Also verify that the communication port is recognized in Control Panel, Ports. If it is not, you may need to add it manually. 5.) Click on the 'Next' button and follow the instructions on the screen. You should be able to use your ThinkPad Modem with all the modem communication applications supported by Windows NT. X. Installing the Infrared Device Driver for Windows NT You can use infrared features using Windows NT dial-up networking. The Windows NT infrared device driver provides you IrDA 1.0 compliant functions, enabling infrared communication up to 115 Kbps. 1.) Start Windows NT, and log on as an administrator. 2.) Click on 'Start' -> 'Run'. 4.) Type "C:\DRIVERS\WNT\INFRARED\INSTALL" and press 'Enter'. 5.) Follow the instructions on the screen. 6.) Restart the computer. After the installation, COM 1, IRQ 4, and I/O address X'3F8' are assigned for the infrared port. XI. Installing the IDE Driver for Windows NT 1.) Start Windows NT and log on as an administrator. 2.) Insert the IDE Driver Diskette into the diskette drive. 3.) Click on 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 4.) Double-click on SCSI Adapters. 5.) Click on the Drivers tab. 6.) If Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller is listed, remove it. 7.) If IDE CD-ROM (Atapi 1.2)/Dual Channel PCI IDE is listed, remove it. 8.) Click on Add. 9.) Click on Have Disk... 10.) Enter "C:\DRIVERS\WNT\IDE" and click on 'OK'. 11.) Select "ThinkPad PIIX4 IDE Driver", then click on 'OK'. 12.) If You are prompted to restart your computer, click 'Yes'.
