Before installing Windows NT, it is recommended that you update your BIOS to the latest version. Updating System Program ----------------------- Notes: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. - If your computer is attached to any kinds of Docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display them on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer. 4. Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 6. Select "Update system program" and follow the instructions on the screen. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes effective. 7. Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is removed from the diskette drive, then turn off the computer. 8. Press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears. 9. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 10. Select Config, then select Initialize. 11. Select OK to initialize the system. Run the diagnostics to make sure that the computer runs with no errors: 12. Turn off the computer, press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears. 13. Select Test, then select Start to run all the basic tests. Various test patterns will appear on the screen. An OK will appear for each device that passes the test. 14. Verify that OK appears for all of the devices tested. 15. Press the Esc key to exit Test and turn off the computer. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: ------------------------- This document contains information to assist you with the installation of Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 on the IBM ThinkPad 760XD and 765D. These instructions assume you are working with a blank formatted hard drive with the CD-ROM installed in the computer and the floppy drive attached externally. If you are going to be installing Windows NT from an external CD-ROM drive or are trying to swap between the floppy and the CD-ROM drive, click here for instructions. NOTE: Windows NT Server is NOT supported on any ThinkPad. THIS INSTALLATION PROCEDURE WILL REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING: - A blank diskette (Needed to create Repair Diskette) - The FDD External Attachment Kit (allows external diskette drive attachment); US Part Number 66G5069 or FRU number 66G3618 - Windows NT 4.0 Workstation 4.0 (CD-ROM) - Windows NT 4.0 Workstation 4.0 Setup Diskettes (3 diskettes) Attaching the external diskette drive ------------------------------------- The ThinkPad 760XD, 765D has a port on the back of the unit which will allow attachment of the diskette drive externally using IBM part 66G3618. Both the diskette drive and the CD-ROM drive must be attached to the machine in order to install from CD-ROM. The diskette and CD-ROM drives can not be hot-swapped during installation. ThinkPad 760 models without a CD-ROM can be installed via CD-ROM mounted in a docking station. Installing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation ------------------------------------- There are many ways to partitioning your system. Please consult the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Users Guide for information on optimal configurations. 1.) Insert the Microsoft Windows NT Workstation Setup Diskette 1 in the external diskette drive. 2.) Reboot the diskette by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL. 3.) Insert the Setup Disk 2 when prompted to do so At the "Welcome to Setup" screen press Enter Select Enter to detect mass storage devices in the system. 4.) Insert Setup Disk 3 when prompted to do so, then press Enter. Notice the following message: Found IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2) PCI IDE controller, press Enter to continue ( this message will display twice). 5.) Insert the Windows NT Workstation CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive when prompted to do so, press Enter (leave diskette 3 in the drive) . 6.) Use the PgDn key to read through the license agreement, then select the key F8 to agree. 7.) It will then give you a list of hardware and software components: Computer: Standard PC Display: Auto Detect Keyboard: XT, AT, or Enhanced Keyboard <83-104 keys> Keyboard Layout: US Pointing Device: Microsoft Mouse Port Mouse NT has completed the hardware detection, so you may review the components before installation. Notice the Display selected by Windows NT is Auto Detect; this may cause the screen black out problem on ThinkPad 760/365X/560 family. Standard VGA needs to be specified for the display. 8.) Use the up arrow to highlight Display: AutoDetect, then press Enter. 8.) Select Standard VGA (640X480, 16 colors), then select Enter. 10.) Make sure No Changes: The above list matches my computer is highlighted and press Enter to continue. 11.) It will then show the existing partitions on your hard drive. Make sure the drive you want to install Windows NT on is highlighted (if you only have one partition then there will only be one drive to select) and press Enter. 12.) It will then prompt you to select the type of file system you want to install on the hard drive. You have the following options: Format the partition using the FAT file system Format the partition using the NTFS file system Convert the partition to NTFS Leave the current file system intact Select one of the options above and press Enter to continue (if you are installing Windows NT on top of your current operating system, then you will want to select one of the last two options). If you selected one of the first two options, it will warn you that formatting your hard drive will erase all data on your hard drive. If you wish to continue, press F to format the hard drive. If you selected to convert the partition to NTFS it will give you a warning that the drive will be inaccessible to any operating system other than Windows NT. If you wish to continue press C. 13.) If you selected to format the partition, you will be prompted for the installation location after the formatting has completed. To accept the default location, press Enter. If you chose to convert the partition to NTFS, the installation will continue and the conversion will take place on the first boot of Windows NT. 14.) A message should appear on the system that say he setup process will examine your hard drive. Press Enter to continue. After it has examined your hard drive (it may take several minutes), it will begin copying files to the hard drive. 15.) After the file copying has finished, remove the diskette from the floppy drive and press Enter to restart the computer. 16.) At the Windows NT Workstation Setup window, click on Next to continue. 17.) A list of setup options should now appear on the screen. Select Portable and then click on Next to continue. 18.) Enter you name and organization and then click on Next to continue. 19.) Enter in the CD Key (this is provided with your Windows NT 4.0 Workstation software) and then click on Next to continue. 20.) Enter a unique computer name to identify your computer on a network. Once entered, click Next to continue. 21.) Enter a password for the Administrator account. After entering the password and confirming it, click Next to continue. NOTE: To install any of the ThinkPad NT drivers, you MUST be logged on Administrative athority 22.) A prompt should appear asking to create an Emergency Repair disk. Select Yes, then click on Next. 23.) You should now be prompted for which component you would like to install. To accept the default, click Next. 24.) Click Next . It will then prompt you as to how this computer will participate on a network. Click on Do not connect this computer to a network at this time and then click on Next to continue. Click on Finish to complete setup. Note: The networking components may be added later from the Network icon in Control Panel. If desired, and the drivers for your network adapter are available, and you have all the required information about your network, the networking components may be installed at this step. Please be aware that since PCMCIA support is not available during the installation of Windows NT, the network will not start until the system is restarted. A message stating that Windows NT was unable to start the network during the installation is normal. 25.) At the Date/Time Properties windows, select the appropriate time zone, check the date and time and then click on Close. 26.) At the Detected Display window, click on OK to continue. At the Display Properties window, click OK. The installation program will then begin copying files to the hard drive. 27.) It will prompt you to label a blank floppy disk as the Emergency Repair Disk and then to insert it into the floppy drive. Do so and then click on OK. 28.) After it is complete, remove the diskette from the floppy drive and click on Restart Computer. 29.) At the Begin Logon window, press the CTRL+ALT+DEL key to logon. Type in your Administrator password and click on OK and you are ready to use Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. NOTE: To install any of the ThinkPad NT drivers, you MUST be logged on with Administrative authority. Installing the video features diskette for Windows NT ----------------------------------------------------- This device driver supports the following display setting on your ThinkPad: 640x480 256/64K colors 16 M colors 800x600 256/64K colors 16M colors 1024x768 256 colors 64K colors ( XGA TFT panel model only) 1280x1024 256 colors (only with CRT mode) Follow these instruction for the display driver installation. 1.) Click on Start, then Settings, and then Control Panel. 2.) Double-click on Display. 3.) Click on the Settings tab and then on Display Type near the bottom of the window. 4.) Under Adapter Type it should list VGA compatible display adapter. Click on Change. 5.) In the Change Display window, click on Have Disk. 6.) Insert the Video Features Diskette for Windows NT into the diskette drive. In the dialog box type a:\ and then click on OK. 7.) Highlight IBM ThinkPad (Cyber 9320/9382/9385) and then click on OK. 8.) It then prompts you if you are sure you want to install the driver. Click on Yes. 9.) After the drivers are installed click on OK. Then click on Close in the Display Type window. 10.) Click on Close in the Display Properties window. 11.) It then prompts you that the system needs to be restarted for the changes to take effect. Remove the diskette from the floppy drive and click on Yes. 12.) After the computer has restarted, it will tell you that a new graphics driver has been installed. Click on OK. In the Display Properties window, under Desktop Area, move the slider until it says 800x600 pixels (if your LCD supports 1024x768, then move the slider until that resolution is selected). Click on Apply. It will tell you that you have not successfully tested these settings. To continue, click on OK. Windows NT should now fill the entire screen area. Click on OK to close the Display Properties window. Installing the ThinkPad Utilities program for Windows NT -------------------------------------------------------- The Windows NT ThinkPad Utilities Program is design to configure the ThinkPad. This program allows for hardware configuration, informs remaining battery life, and controls suspend/resume as you do in the Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 environment. 1.) Insert the ThinkPad Utility Program Diskette for Windows NT into the diskette drive. 2.) Click on Start, then Run, and type in a:\setup and then click on OK. 3.) At the Install window, click on OK. 4.) It will then prompt you where you want install the drivers. To accept the default, click on OK. NOTE: Only a short name can be specified as a target directory. If you create a directory with spaces, the ThinkPad Configuration program will not function correctly. 5.) You are then prompted for which options you wish to install. You can install the ThinkPad Features and/or the Personalization Editor. Click on the Personalization Editor (will required the DOS Utility Diskette) to remove the check mark (you can rerun this program to install it later if you wish). Click on Install. 6.) After the installation is complete, click on OK. Installing Windows NT IDE Utility Diskette ------------------------------------------ This diskette provides the IDE driver for Windows NT users. 1.) Start WinNT 4.0, and log on with the user ID authorized as an administrator. 2.) Double click on SCSI Adapters in Control Panel. If you find the following drivers from Drivers tab, remove them. Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller IDE CD-ROM(Atapi 1.2)/Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller 3.) Click Add.... 4.) Click Have Disk... in Install Driver screen. 5.) Insert the diskette to drive A. 6.) Specify the path (A:\). 7.) Select the following driver ThinkPad PIIX IDE Driver 8.) Restart the computer. Installing the PC card support software for Windows NT ------------------------------------------------------ Note: If you have installed any PCMCIA adapters in the system, please shut down Windows NT, remove any PCMCIA cards, and restart before installing this software. 1.) You must be logged onto Windows NT as Administrator. 2.) Insert the PC Card Director for Windows NT diskette in the diskette drive. 3.) Click on Start, then Run and type a:\install and click on OK. 4.) At the PC Card Director Setup for Windows NT window, click on Next. 5.) At the Installation Type window, you are given the option of doing an express installation or an uninstallation of previous drivers. Select one of these options and then click on Next. Note: If there is a previous version installed on the system, then you will want to uninstall the old drivers first. 6.) Next you are prompted as to where you want to install the drivers. To accept the default, click on Next. Then click on Finish to complete the setup. 8.) When it has finished the installation, it will prompt you as to whether you want to restart the computer. Remove the diskette from the drive and click Yes. Installing the video capture driver ----------------------------------- 1.) Click on Start, then Settings and then Control Panel. 2.) Double-click on the Multimedia icon. 3.) In the Multimedia Properties window, click on the Devices tab. 4.) Click on Add... . A window titled Add shows up. It shows a List of Drivers. Select Unlisted or Updated Driver and then click on OK. 5.) At the Install Driver window, type in a:\ in the dialog box and then click on OK. 6.) The window titled Add Unlisted or Updated Driver will show up the following device: 9385/2 Video Capture Click on OK. 7.) After the installation is complete, click OK. Then click on OK in the Multimedia Properties window. You will need to restart the computer for the changes to take affect. Note: Refer to the readme file on the video capture driver diskette for additional information about helpful hints and tips. Installing the MPEG-2 MultiMedia Driver --------------------------------------- 1.) Click on Start, then Settings and then Control Panel. 2.) Double-click the mouse Multimedia. 3.) In the Multimedia Properties window, click on the Devices tab. 4.) Click on Add... A window titled Add shows up. It shows a List of Drivers. Select Unlisted or Updated Driver and then click on OK. 5.) At the Install Driver window, type in a:\ in the dialog box and then click on OK. 6.) The window titled Add Unlisted or Updated Driver will show up the following device : (MCI)IBM MPEG-2 Decoder Click on OK. 7.) After the installation is complete, click OK in the Installation window. Then click on OK in the Multimedia Properties window. You will need to restart the computer for the changes to take affect. Note: Refer to the readme file on the MPEG features diskette for additional information about helpful hints and tips as well as limitations. Installing Mwave drivers for Windows NT --------------------------------------- Before installing Mwave on the ThinkPad the DSP feature needs to be enabled. Follow these steps to enable the DSP feature and to install Mwave: 1.) Select Start, Programs, ThinkPad, ThinkPad Features. 2.) Select Modem button. Verify that the internal modem is enabled. If not, click the Enable radio button. 3.) Select OK. 4.) Close ThinkPad Features by double clicking on the upper left hand corner. 5.) Shutdown Windows NT and restart your computer in order for the changes to take effect. If you made no changes then you do not need to restart the computer. Proceed installing Mwave driver for Windows NT. To run Mwave under Windows NT, the system must have a minimum of 16 MB of RAM. 1.) Select Start, then Run. 2.) Place the Mwave Installation disk #1 in your disk drive. Type a:\setup in the Open field of the dialog and select OK 3.) Select Continue from the Welcome Screen to start the installation. 4.) It will then prompt you where to install the drivers. To accept the default click on Continue. 5.) Insert Mwave Diskette 2 when prompted to do so, then select OK. 6.) Select OK for hints on how to setup the NT COM Port. Then select Restart Now (do not remove the diskette yet). 7.) After the system stops reading the diskette, remove it from the diskette drive. Press Enter after rebooting the computer. Note: The installation does not make any changes to the config.sys, autoexec.bat, or system.ini files for Windows NT. To install the Mwave MIDI Samples follow these steps. (MIDI files are note required for Mwave to function to on your system.) 1.) Insert the MIDI installation disk in diskette drive. 2.) Select Start, then Run, then type A:\SETUP. 3.) You will be given the option to install or uninstall the MIDI samples. Select Complete MIDI Sample Install and then click on OK. 4.) You will then be asked where to install the drivers. Click OK to accept the default. 5.) Select Yes to use the MIDI samples. 6.) Insert diskettes 2 through 6 when prompted to do so. 7.) Select OK when the installation is completed . 8.) Remove the diskette from the A drive and restart the system. Installing the MWAVE Modem -------------------------- 1.) Select Start, then Settings, then select Control Panel 2.) Select the Ports icon. Verify that the list of COM ports includes the COM port that the modem is using. If you do not know what COM port the modem is using you can find out through ThinkPad Features. By default, the modem uses COM 2. If the COM port for the modem is not listed click on ADD. Verify that the following settings match the modem settings: COM Port: COM 2 Base I/O Port Address: 02F8 IRQ: 3 3.) Select OK. 4.) Restart the system if you had to add a port, otherwise, continue with the next step. 5.) From Control Panel, select the Modems icon. 6.) Select the option Don't detect my modem, I will select it from a list, then select Next. Windows NT will start loading the modems list . 7.) Select IBM from the manufacturers list and select IBM ThinkPad 28.8 MWAVE Data Fax (or 33.6 depending on the version you are installing) from the modems list, then select Next. If given then option select COM2 as the modem's COM Port, then select Next. 8.) Type the area code and the number required for an outside line. Select Next, then Finish, then Close. 9.) Shutdown and restart the system. You have successfully completed the installation of the ThinkPad Programs for NT 4.0. Installing the Service Pack for Windows NT ------------------------------------------ If you are going to install Service Pack 3 for Windows NT, install it before the Infrared Device Driver for Windows NT. If you subsequently reapply the service pack, you may have to reinstall these drivers. To install the service pack, follow the instructions in the readme included with the service pack. Installing Infrared Device Driver --------------------------------- Not required for NT to work on your computer. Installing infrared support will use a COM port, IRQ, and IO ranges. This should only be installed after installing Service Pak 3. 1.) Insert the Windows NT Infrared driver diskette into the diskette drive 2.) Click on Start, then Run and type A:\INSTALL and then click on OK. 3.) At the Infrared Driver Setup window, click on Install. 4.) After it has finished installing the drivers, remove the diskette and click on Restart Computer. Installing the Battery Check Diskette ------------------------------------- This diskette contains the program to check if a battery pack is installed at the operating system starts in order to ensure the system works as designed. 1.) Log on Windows NT as administrator privilege. 2.) Open 'command prompt', then type 'A:\WINNT\INSTALL.EXE'. 3.) After installation, shutdown the operating system to take effect.
