INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: ------------------------- This document contains information to assist you with the installation of Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 on the IBM ThinkPad 770, 770E, 770ED. These instructions make the following assumptions: - No additional hardware connected to the system, i.e. external mouse, keyboard, docking stations, pcmcia cards, etc. - No Network Card connected to the system. ( Can be added later. These instructions do not tell how to setup/configure network cards.) - That you have Backed up your software and personal data files on the hard disk. NOTE: DVD MOVIE PLAY BACK IS **NOT** SUPPORTED UNDER WINDOWS NT! INSTALLING WINDOWS NT 4.0 WORKSTATION 1. Read the Windows NT installation guide. - If you plan to use OS/2 Warp with Windows NT, you need to use the OS/2 Warp Boot Manager. For more information, read Installing IBM OS/2 in the Online User's Guide. You can install Windows NT using the internal CD-ROM drive or an externally attached CD-ROM drive. However, if your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, or if a port replicator is not available, use one of the following two alternative ways to install Windows NT: A.) Using an external CD-ROM drive in a DOS environment If you have an external CD-ROM drive that connects under a DOS environment, you can install Windows NT in DOS: 1. Insert the Windows NT compact disc in the external CD-ROM drive. 2. Go to the CD-ROM directory; then go to the \I386 directory. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is drive D, go to D:\I386 3. At the command prompt, type WINNT; then press Enter. For example, D:\I386>winnt 4. Follow the instructions on the screen. B.) Using a network server You can install Windows NT on multiple computers by first copying the Windows NT master source files to a shared drive on a network server. After connecting your computer to a network, such as with the DOS LAN requester, you can install the files from the network server to your computer at the DOS command prompt. 2.) Boot off the three NT boot diskettes or, if you have the internal CDROM drive set to bootable, boot off the NT CDROM. Note: DO NOT use diskettes made during the installation of NT on another machine! 3.) At the Windows NT Workstation Setup window, you will be given a list of options. It will then show the existing partitions on your hard drive. Make sure the drive you want to install Windows NT on is highlighted (if you only have one partition then there will only be one drive to select) and press Enter. 9.) It will then prompt you to select the type of file system you want to install on the hard drive. You have the following options: Format the partition using the FAT file system Format the partition using the NTFS file system Convert the partition to NTFS Leave the current file system intact Select one of the options above and press Enter to continue (if you are installing Windows NT on top of your current operating system, then you will want to select one of the last two options.
