IBM PC Server 720 Fixes and Enhancements This README file contains information about the system firmware upgrades available for the IBM* PC Server 720. Note: After reading this information, press the ESC key and you will return to the Flash Utility program with the option to continue or cancel the upgrade. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading the POST/BIOS to IBM SurePath* BIOS Revision Level 08 or higher The following list identifies fixes and enhancements that appear in the BIOS Revision Level 08 or higher: 1.Resolving Windows NT** loading problem(1). 2.Resolving problems during startup when using Olicom adapter. (1) This level of BIOS must be used with the IBM PC Server 720 Reference Diskette Version 1.10 or higher to resolve specific issues highlighted in the list above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading the POST/BIOS to IBM SurePath BIOS Revision Level 09 or higher The following list identifies fixes and enhancements that appear in the BIOS Revision Level 09 or higher: 1. Resolving configuration errors with adapters requiring memory allocation below the 16M address. 2. Improving systems performance with the new PCI tuning algorithm. 3. Recovering systems from a primary CPU failure. 4. Isolating failing memory modules(2). 5. Supporting Windows** bootable CD-ROM(3). (2) This level of BIOS must be used with the IBM PC Server 720 Diagnostic Diskette Version 1.10 or higher to resolve specific issues highlighted in the list above. (3) This function is not supported on all machine types. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading the POST/BIOS to IBM SurePath BIOS Revision Level 10 or higher The following list identifies fixes and enhancements that appear in the BIOS Revision Level 10 or higher: 1. Enhancing POST messages. 2. Running Extended Test Program in video mode(4). 3. Resolving cache disabled problem when running memory diagnostics(4). (4) This level of BIOS must be used with the IBM PC Server 720 Diagnostic Diskette Version 1.12 or higher to resolve specific issues highlighted in the list above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading the POST/BIOS to IBM SurePath BIOS Revision Level 11 or higher The following list identifies fixes and enhancements that appear in the BIOS Revision Level 11 or higher: 1. Resolving I960 error during PCI adapter configuration. 2. Resolving boot failure resulting from BIOS 10 NVRAM conflict. 3. Resolving MMC adapter failure for all memory sizes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading the POST/BIOS to IBM SurePath BIOS Revision Level 12 or higher The following list identifies fixes and enhancements that appear in the BIOS Revision Level 12 or higher: 1. Enhancing memory configuration for servers with system memory of 512 MB or greater installed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading the POST/BIOS to IBM SurePath BIOS Revision Level 14 or higher The following list identifies fixes and enhancements that appear in the BIOS Revision Level 14 or higher: 1. IBM very strongly recommends upgrading your 720 to BIOS level 14. Especially, if your system has 512MB of memory or more. By not installing this BIOS, you could experience many different types of problems under all of the operating systems. Some of the problems observed were: not being able to install OS/2, not being able to mount drives under Novell and various problems under NT. To avoid these potential problems, it would be in your best interest to install BIOS 14 as soon as possible. Even if you have less than 512MB of memory, it would be good to install this BIOS to avoid future problems.
