General Description

The RP300 is the heart of the T300, Telefunken's high-end stereo system of the 1981 generation. In addition to the preamp-typical tasks of signal switching, sound controls, and driving the main amp, it also includes a remote control receiver that lets you operate volume, balance, sound control, and input selection conveniently from your couch. But this is not enough: it also decodes the control signals for the cassette deck, turntable, and tuner, meaning that you can also control all signal sources with the same remote control transmitter. TO accomplish this, the RP300 includes three DIN8 sockets that are connected to the other components wit cables, in addition to the signal cables. In 1981, this was quite an economic solution when microelectronics were still somewhat expensive. Placing the necessary decoder logic only once into one component made sense.

To put the icing on the cake, the RP300 contains 4 switched AC outlets, so you can turn the whole tower on and off via the RP300.

Common Failures

The RP300 uses CMOS analog switches to switch among the different input sources. In one of my RP300's, the switch responsible for the tuner input was shot - maybe due to excessive static discharge. The 4016/4066 switches are however quite standard. You might consider using the pin-compatible MAX4066 from Maxim. They are pin-compatible variants of the 4066 with much better electrical characteristics.
