General Description

The RR200 was the 'better' offering in the Silver Series. The most important change is the digital frequency display, compared to the RR100's analog scale. The tuning is however still analog with the display just being a frequency counter, so the tuner section could be called a 'hybrid' construction.

The RR200's amplifier section shared a lot of common features with the RA200. The final stage is the same discrete, liquid-cooled solution (however with a slightly smaller output power). Even the input board is the same, shown in the photo above. The RR200 however does not use semiconductor switches, so only the sockets and the phono preamplifier's parts are populated. Instead, shielded cables carry the signals to the input selector switch at the front. A closer look reveals that the socket used for the RA200's tuner input is populated but not used, probably because all sockets form a monolithic block.

A closer look onto the tuning section. As said, tuning is still analog as with the RR100. A difference is the tuning principle in the FM section: Varicaps instead of variable capacitors. This is necessary to allow preprogrammable stations without the horrendous mechanical overhead you may find in an old car radio or 60er-vintage TV: a set of pots, one for each station, plus an additional pot on the variable capacitor's axis. A set of switches selects among those n+1 pots. Given that digital synthesizers and microprocessors were already available in the early 80s (and used in the RT200, RT300, and MT1), this construction principle looks somehow like an anachronism (it was rather popular in the 70s).

Common Failures

none known, my RR200's did not show a failure up to now - except for the 'usual' failures like volume/sound pots not sliding cleanly any more and thus making 'noise' during turning...
