Quartz-Controlled Turntable
1981
The RS 30 is the turntable of Telefunken's 1981 high-end system T 300. Though its quality and features perfectly match the rest of the system, it is immediatley obvious thet the RS 30 is somehow an exception, not only with its name; the round knobs and buttons contrast to the rectangular ones of all other components. This is no coincidence or accident; the RS 30 is actually a modified version of last year's high-end turntable CS 20 resp. STS 1, extended with a remote control input for the RP 300 and a different drive control board. It is not exactly known why this happened; my guess is that the CS 20/STS 1 chassis was the only option for a remote-controllable chassis; both the RS 100 and RS 200 have a mechanical drive control, which cannot easily be extended for electrical/remote operation.

The RS 30 has a two-motor chassis, with an extra motor to operate the tone arm. This motor however has a relatively low torque, and the grease in its bearings tends to harden if the turntable hasn't been used for a longer time. It's usually sufficient to turn its shaft a bit manually to make things work again. Otherwise, the usage of two motors reduces the mechanical effort significantly and makes a large contribution to the reliability and durability of this turntable.
