General Description

The TR 550 was the 'luxury class' receiver at that time. It offers most of the functions and features one could expect at that time, like preprogrammed stations with sensor selection or a presence control. In many ways, this receiver is similar to the HR 5500. Telefunken usually built two variants of a receiver at that time: The 'European Line' with black, wide, rounded plastic cases, similar to the receivers built into the earlier 70s, and the 'International Line' with 19-inch wide metal cases. The TR 550 could be regarded as the 'international version' of the HR 5500, however without the digital frequency display and the short wave range. The TR 550 uses the same chassis frame as most other Tuners, Amplifiers, and Receivers of that series, however now the housing is finally full...

The potentiometers to select the stations for the FM station sensors are located on the TR 550's top, covered by a lid. This makes changing the stations a bit uncomfortable when the device is located in a rack. Futhermore, the frequency display for these pots is only a chain of 5 LEDs, so tuning typically means to select the station with the main tuning knob and dial, and then turn the pot until you hear the same music...

Common Failures

None known so far, but since the TR 550 uses the same Hifi Chassiss 2000 for the power amp section as e.g. the TA 750, similar cautions apply...
